Icon Writing Retreat

Learn to write icons from professional icon writer Melissa Moss. This retreat includes daily instruction and chaplain-led time for prayer and meditation. You will leave the 5-day retreat with your own icon. We will be working with the icon of Christ Pantocrator from St. Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai This retreat is intended for those who are new to iconography.

The retreat will be held in as close to a scriptorium atmosphere as possible. We will start with prayer, have prayer at noon-day and end the workday with prayer. We pray especially that the Holy Spirit will work through our hands to help us depict the holy images.  Technique and icon lore will be covered, and questions welcomed from the participants but otherwise we will work in silence.

On Tuesday evening the group will travel to Grace Church in the Mountains, Episcopal in Waynesville for a lecture and visit to the stunning traveling exhibition that presents the mystery and spiritual power of icons through the work of artist Ludmila Pawlowska’s exhibit Icons in Transformation. Overnight participants will purchase dinner in Waynesville on Tuesday.

About the Instructor: Melissa Moss

Melissa-Moss.jpeg

I’ve been interested in the visual arts all my life, it seems.  I have an undergraduate degree in art (painting) and a graduate degree in art history.  I became a potter and worked at that, and taught, for 25 + years. I’d always been enamored of icons but could find no one to teach me until I moved to North Carolina ten years ago. There were two teachers who come to Kanuga each year, and I’ve been studying with them - and elsewhere - ever since.  I write both egg-tempera and acrylic icons.

Icons allow me to combine my love of art with my love of Christianity with my love of meditation. And I’m really excited about sharing the joy of icons at Lake Logan!
